For more than two decades B.B. & THE BLUES SHACKS have been playing their unique blend of Blues and Soul all over Europe and overseas.

They just returned from a Californian tour where they also performed at the famous Russian River Blues & Jazz Festival sharing stages with Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, WAR a.o. From a combo strictly devoted to 1940s and '50s Jump Blues and R&B, the BBs matured into one of Europe's leading contemporary blues and soul bands.
With plenty of style and taste, the band's original songs and music are based on the legacy of African-American music which experienced its heydays from the mid-fifties to the late 1960s. Vintage music in its purest form.

The latest project created by the band from northern Germany adds even more authentic flavor to their down home style. After soul singer Bonita's brief appearance on the BB's 2012 'Come Along' album and an overwhelmingly acclaimed joint appearance at the band's own blues festival in Hildesheim, we now have the first CD production featuring BONITA & THE BLUES SHACKS.

The female singer from South Africa perfectly complements vocalist Michael Arlt and the other band members. *BONITA NIESSEN*'s vocal style is sweet, powerful and soulful, performing blues and soul numbers with deep feeling, intensity and rocking fun!

We really don't know – but it's likely that the South Africa-born singer grew up listening to the music of Ann Peebles, Aretha Franklin, Ruth Brown or Barbara Lynn. In Europe today, the term 'female blues' is often associated with pale looking girlies hanging on to their electric guitars. With her elegant appearance BONITA really stands out.

*The combination of this unique singer with the tight BB's combo appears to be the perfect vehicle in terms of transporting blues and soul music from the past into the present. 15 songs from Magic Sam to Barbara Lynn on their first corporate and superb sounding CD production.

Reviews CCD 11110 BONITA & THE BLUES SHACKS

On Bonita & the Blues Shacks, the artists further explore classic blues and soul forms to enchanting effect. Niessen’s soprano is light and agile, yet reveals a strong, soulful edge (…). Her voice melds naturally with Arlt’s ruggedly charming tenor (…); the joy in their interplay is infectious. (…) Guitarist Andreas Arlt’s attack and tone are beautiful—smooth and clean (…), a bit grungier on “Turn The Lamps Down Low” and “Satisfy My Soul”. (…) A spirited collection of vintage-styled blues, roots and soul, Bonita & the Blues Shacks’ leaves the listener hoping for future collaborations.

The opening track swings mightily with the band cooking up a heady brew and Michael Arlt's careworn vocals are perfectly complemented by Bonita's sassy but sweet vocals as she takes charge of the number. (…) This album is a bit of a departure for the excellent Blues Shacks but by teaming up with Bonita they have produced an absolute cracker.

Let me state here that this is easily one of the finest sets I have reviewed for 'Last Writes'. Bonita has a fine, flexible voice, and although she can tackle both classic and southern-styled soul with ease (and I love the Ike & Tina-styled r&b of 'You're Driving Me Crazy'), and The Blues Shacks' musical ability is the perfect foil, (…) though all fifteen tracks are more than weil worth a listen – at least! You guessed it: this one comes highly recommended.

(…) Relaxte wie treibende, angestochene, ansteckende Songs. Gitarren-Soli gestochen, ökonomisch-konzentriert ohne jede Effekthascherei in klarem Ton (ausgezeichnet), Orgel/Piano-begleitet, einige ausdrucksstarke Harmonica-Features.

When you combine B.B. & The Blues Shacks, one of Europe’s most respected blues bands, with Bonita Niessen, one of South Africa’s most soulful singers, you get one of the most stunning records of the year. The musical craftsmanship of the Arlt brothers, Andreas on guitar and Michael on vocals and harmonica, and the worldclass vocals of Niessen expertly explore the connections between blues and soul that existed in the 1950s.

Bonita’s soulful vocals add an extra dimension to a band that can play everything from swing to soul. (…) The music comes from a variety of sources including soul, Rn’B and rock and roll classics plus two originals penned by Bonita and the Arlt brothers. (…) This is a superb album with a wide range of material, all well played and featuring a singer whose voice merits the widest exposure. Recommended!

Saustark ist das schnelle “This Little Girl's Gone Rockin'” (…)

& The Blues Shacks“ vorbei. (…)

LIVE-REVIEW:
