Sein zweites Album unter eigenem Namen, für CrossCut in Chicago von Dick Shurman (u.a. Johnny Winter, Albert Collins, Charlie Musselwhite) produziert ist sein homogenstes.
Seit 1959, als er erstmals in der Band von Howlin' Wolf auftauchte, später dann in der Band von Paul Butterfield ('63), zählt Little Smokey zu den konstanten Größen im Blues Chicagos.
Sein flüssiger, an Albert King erinnernder Gitarrenstil, seine rauchige Stimme und packende Songs sind sein Markenzeichen. Ein Leckerbissen für alle Freunde eines gitarrenbetonten Blues aus Chicago.

Produced by Dick Shurman in Chicago, this is - as Smokey points out himself - his most personal musical statement.
He started out with Howlin' Wolf in '59, worked with Paul Butterfield, The Legendary Blues Band, and Mississippi Heat, a.o.
His guitar style is reminding me of Albert King's, his vocals are rough but intense, and he's the writer of great songs. A fine album for all you lovers of contemporary, guitar-driven blues from Chicago.

Und genau das, was man sich unter Chicago Blues vorstellt, präsentiert Little Smokey Smothers auch auf seiner aktuellen Veröffentlichung, erschienen bei CrossCut. Eine schmatzende Gitarre, die auch die Einflüsse einerseits von Albert King, aber auch der Jazzgröße Kenny Burell wiederspiegelt, satte Bläsersätze, ein hämmerndes Piano, Hammond-Orgel, eine gute Rhythmussektion und ein cooler Gesang, wie ihn eben nunmal nur schwarze Bluessänger hinkriegen. (...) Heute ist er jedoch wieder voll da, wie diese Platte eindrucksvoll beweist.
