Zwei Jahre sind vergangen seit der Veröffentlichung von Doug Jays erstem Album auf CrossCut, "Jackpot!". Mit "Under The Radar" setzt er seinen erfolgreichen Weg fort.

Doug Jay (er heißt wirklich so!) wurde in der Gegend um Washington, DC geboren und arbeitet seit Mitte der 70er Jahre professionell als Musiker. Erste Erfolge kamen mit den Allstars from Charlottesville, einer ausgezeichneten Bluesband aus Virginia. Später hat Doug an der West- und Ostküste u.a. mit Bob Margolin und Alex Schultz gearbeitet sowie mit Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Bobby Bland, Sunnyland Slim, John Hammond Jr. und Bruce Springsteen auf der Bühne gestanden. Im Jahre 2000 gründete er seine europäische Formation, die Blue Jays.

Doug Jay & The Blue Jays sind eine internationale Blues und Roots Band, die ein bisschen anders als andere daher kommt. Zwar liegen die Wurzeln ihrer Musik – früher R&B, Rock'n'Roll, Blues und Soul - in der Vergangenheit Amerikas; dennoch lebt die Band im Hier und Jetzt. Das meiste Material auf "Under The Radar" hat Doug selbst geschrieben (mit etwas Hilfe von Jimmy Reiter). Dazu gibt es Coverversionen von Stücken, die Little Milton, Lowell Fulson oder Lonesome Sundown zuerst aufgenommen wurden.

Gitarrist Jimmy Reiter gilt als "einer der feinsten jungen Bluesgitarristen" (Blues & Rhythm, UK) klebt jedoch keineswegs an der Tradition. Er hat seinen eigenen Stil entwickelt: direkt und elegant zugleich.

Bassist Jasper Mortier kommt aus Amsterdam und hat in den Niederlanden u.a. in der Band Boyd Small 4+1 gespielt. Er fühlt sich gleichermaßen auf dem Kontra- wie dem elektrischen Bass zu Hause und hat eine Vielzahl US-amerikanischer Musiker bei Europatourneen begleitet.

Schlagzeuger André Werkmeisters Biografie enthält Kooperationen mit Saxophonist Tommy Schneller, den Gitarristen Gregor Hilden und Tom Vieth sowie Pianist Chris Rannenberg. Er war Mitglied der Silvertones und gilt mittlerweile als einer der besten Bluesdrummer in Europa.

Der Weltenbummler in Sachen 'Blues' wird 1953 in Pensacola, Florida geboren. Seine Familie zieht ständig um und wird schließlich in Washington, D.C. sesshaft.
Ein Album von Little Walter bringt Doug JAYfast um den Verstand und lässt den Wunsch in ihm reifen, Harmonica zu spielen.
Mitte der Siebziger kommt er zu den Allstars From Charlottesville, einer innovativen, leider auch kurzlebigen Band jener Ära. Deren 1978er Album wird von der Kritik gefeiert. Es ist vor allem Dougs Harmonica, die begeistert: innovativ, weg vom Klischee und stumpfen Kopien.
Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in der Band von Bob Margolin und einigen weiteren Jahren an der Ostküste zieht es Doug 1990 nach Kalifornien, wo damals die wohl spannendste Bluesszene der U.S.A. zu finden war.
Hier nimmt er sein erstes Soloalbum auf und kommt 1993 als Gast der Mojo Blues Band erstmals nach Europa.

Mitte der 90er Jahre lebt der Sänger und Harmonicaspieler wieder an der Ostküste und produziert sein zweites Album unter Mitwirkung solch illustrer Persönlichkeiten wie Alex Schultz oder Big Joe Maher. Mehr und mehr pendelt er jedoch zwischen den U.S.A. und Europa - und schließlich beschließt er, sich in Osnabrück, Deutschlands heimlicher Blueshauptstadt, niederzulassen.

Mit seinen aktuellen Blue Jays nimmt er dieses abwechslungsreiche Album auf. Abgesehen von drei Coverversionen (von Otis Spann und Floyd Dixon) gibt's ausschließlich eigene Kompositionen der Band.
Jimmy Reiter glänzt als kraftvoller Rhythmusgitarrist und brilliert als selbstbewusster und geschmacksicherer Solist.
Die Rhythmusgruppe groovt lässig und kraftvoll und die Gäste bereichern das Programm mit einer Extraportion Klasse.

Stilistisch geht's von Jump Blues und einigen Reminiszenzen an den Blues Louisianas bis hin zu mächtigen, gitarrenbetonten Blues mit viel Tiefgang.
Dougs Stimme klingt überzeugend, gefühl- und kraftvoll zugleich.
Sein Blues kommt zeitgemäß, ohne jedoch die Tradition zu ignorieren.

Ein starkes, selbstproduziertes Album!

Doug Jay, "musical globetrotter of the blues", was born in 1953 in Pensacola , Florida . His family moved often before finally settling in the Washington , DC area. Upon hearing recordings of master blues harpist Little Walter, he became hopelessly hooked, and started playing harmonica.

His professional career began in the early 70s, and in 1976 he joined The Allstars from Charlottesville, one of the innovative yet short-lived bands of the era. Their 1978 album release was a critic's favorite. Doug's harp playing sounded particularly fresh and inspiring: innovative, uncliched and unique. After a stay in Bob Margolin's band and a couple of more years on the east coast, Doug moved to California in 1990, during the boom years of the west coast blues scene. While in California , Doug recorded his first solo album. In 1993 he toured Europe twice as a member of Austria 's Mojo Blues Band. By the mid-nineties he was living back on the east coast and produced his second solo release (with a.o. Alex Schultz - gtr and Big Joe Maher - drums). He began to come over to Europe on a regular basis and eventually made Osnabrück , Germany his European home.

Backed by his current touring band, The Blue Jays, Doug has recorded this varied set of blues. With the exception of two Otis Spann covers and a Floyd Dixon tune, Doug and the band wrote all the material. Jimmy Reiter cuts quite a figure as a powerful rhythm guitarist. On lead guitar he's tasteful and self-assured. The rhythm section's equally good when swinging or grooving. A small list of hand-chosen guests adds that extra spice to these recordings. Doug covers a whole lot of ground here, from laid-back swamp blues to the deep sounds of Chicago , from guitar-driven blues to jump and swing in the finest west coast tradition. Doug's a fine vocalist; soulful, mourning and powerful, and his harp playing is exceptional.

Although rooted in the traditions of African-American music, this set represents a superb contemporary piece of blues.

Jay is a seasoned harp-blower with old-school veins that run hot and his handpicked band provide the necessary racket to complement this lowdown blowdown. (...)The Blue Jays hand in a set that wins as often as back-alley craps master with a pocketful of loaded dice. Christoph "Jimmy" Reiter's guitar work is dazzling with touches of Willie Johnson, Otis Rush, and Bill Jennings, and the rocket-fueled rhythm section of Jasper Mortier on bass and Andre Werkmeister's drumming lock the grooves giving Jay plenty of room to show his wares as a powerful singer and masterful harpman. The set opens in great style with ‘In The Darkest Hour’, a churning 50’s styled blues replete with brooding vocals, moaning harp, shimmering chords and menacing Magic Sam styled guitar, setting a high standard that is maintained throughout this set. ‘Real Bad Girl’ stays in that Magic Sam groove, the mood enhanced by Rannenberg’s “down in the alley” piano, a pulsing bass line and Reiter’s salacious guitar riffs.

Jay freely draws his influences from a variety of sources, “I’ll Be Anything For Your Love” being a rollicking slab of pure rock’n’roll that has him sounding like a b lue Gene Vincent; ‘Giddy-Up’ is a loping swap instrumental that recalls Slim Harpo and Lazy Lester; whilst both George Smith and William Clarke come to mind ‘I Jump’, a classic slab of swinging West Coast blues.

It is great to hear an artist borrowing from the Otis Spann songbook, Jay laying down wonderful renditions of two Spann classics, ‘Half Ain’t Been Told’ and ‘It Must Have Been The Devil’; the former imbued with a ‘St James Infirmary’ feel courtesy of it’s desolate piano and brooding harp and vocals, whilst the latter is pure Chi-Town with superb piano and suitably smokey vocals.

Another influence appears to be Arthur Alexander, whose spectre permeates the Latin tinged soul of ‘Ya Hoodoo Me’, and the exuberant ‘Jackpot’, a New Orleans flavoured slab of R&B that is also laced with shades of Huey Smith. The classic 50’s R&B of Floyd Dixon’s ‘When I Get Lucky’, where both harp and sax exchange wild jumping riffs as Rannenberg’s piano boogies incessantly, and the bouncing New Orleans R&B of ‘Each And Every Day’ with it’s swamp infused harp, are further delights of a set that will leave harp fans drooling for more.

Hut ab, Mr. Jay! (...)"Jackpot! ist ein vielseitiges, musikalisch exorbitantes Album gewoden, was auch den wirklich glänzend aufgelegten Mitmusikern zu verdanken ist. Was' Gitarrist Christoph "Jimmy" Reiter da an gewaltigen, kraftvollen Licks spielt, ist so großartig, dass er mit diesem Album definitiv in einem Atemzug mit Andreas Arlt und Kai Strauß genannt werden muss. (...) Diese Scheibe wird sowohl in den Bestenlisten der Puristen auftauchen als auch bei denen, die ein bisschen mehr brauchen. Großartige Sache!
