Seit zwanzig Jahren singt und spielt Philipp Fankhauser seine Musik abseits vom Mainstream, er kümmert sich nicht um Trends. Die Songs, die der 44jährige schreibt, sind gespeist aus den Erlebnissen eines Singer/Songwriters, welcher den Ursprüngen seiner Musik nachspürte, der dabei seine Identität suchte und sie auch schlussendlich fand. Er lebte den Blues in dessen Heimatland, in den USA, und brachte den Soul in seiner Stimme mit zurück. Er reiste nach Rio, weil ihn die Leichtigkeit der Bossa Nova seit seiner Jugend fasziniert und verzaubert. Und er lernte von Freunden wie seinem Landsmann Stephan Eicher, wie man Songs neu erfindet. 'Love Man Riding' lebt von all den Dingen, die einen Philipp Fankhauser durch die Welt ziehen lassen. Damit ist der Singer/Songwriter aus der Schweiz schon wieder in den Charts gelandet.

Philipp Fankhausers Biografie ist die eines Bluesmusikers; er sieht sich auch von Kopf bis Fuß als einer, aber zugleich sträubt er sich gegen sämtliche Klischees, die dieses Etikett begleiten. "Für mich zählt der Song, der Ausdruck - das, was einer zu sagen hat. Es geht nicht um Gitarren oder Harps als Mittelpunkt, sondern um Lieder, die etwas zu vermitteln haben. Und dafür braucht es dann natürlich passende Instrumente." So wie bei den alten Sängern, wie bei Jimmy Witherspoon oder Bobby Bland, auf die Fankhauser sich gern bezieht. Dieser Blues hat mehr vom Soul als vom Rock´n´Roll. "Aber, so sehr ich diese Sänger schätze, so klar ist auch, dass ich einen anderen kulturellen Hintergrund habe. Bland ist ein schwarzer Musiker aus den USA, ich bin ein weißer aus der Schweiz. Ich bin Philipp Fankhauser."

"Love Man Riding" ist das elfte Album von Fankhauser, aber erst das zweite, das er mit seiner Liveband eingespielt hat. Sieben Songs hat er dafür geschrieben oder mit anderen Musikern erarbeitet, die anderen fünf stammen fast alle von Freunden - wie dem Produzenten Dennis Walker oder dem verstorbenen Musiker Johnny Copeland.

Mit dem legendären Produzenten Dennis Walker verbindet den Schweizer seitdem eine Freundschaft, die immer wieder zu im Wortsinn produktiven Ergebnissen führt. Durch die Nähe zu Walker hat sich natürlich ergeben, dass Musiker aus der Band von Robert Cray zu Fankhausers Entourage gestoßen sind. So ist seine Liveband inzwischen international besetzt, mit Musikern, die auch unterschiedliche Vorlieben mitbringen und Facetten beisteuern. "Meine musikalische Nachbarschaft besteht aus Leuten, die aus verschiedensten Richtungen stammen. Der Schlagzeuger spielt in einer Latin-Band, die anderen kommen bis auf Richard Cousins nicht aus der Blues-Ecke." Ein paar Songs auf "Love Man Riding" sind mit sanft und locker klingenden Akkorden auf der Rhythmusgitarre bestückt, die eine leichte Brise in Richtung Latin ankündigen und die Perkussion auf dem alten Richard Torrance-Hit "Rio de Janeiro Blue" kommt auch nicht von ungefähr, denn neben dem Blues schätzt Philipp Fankhauser auch eine ganz andere Musikrichtung. "Ja, seit Kindesbeinen habe ich zwei Lieben. Das ist ganz klar der Blues, aber das ist genauso klar die Bossa Nova. Wie kann man Blues und Bossa zusammenbringen? Sagt Philipp Fankhauser: "Der Blues ist mein Ding, die Bossa beflügelt mich."

Das Publikum in der Schweiz scheint diesen Mann zu mögen: "Love Man Riding" startete dort wenige Tage nach der Veröffentlichung voll durch und gelangte von Null auf Platz Sieben der Charts.

Love Man Riding, das bereits elfte Album des Schweizer Songwriters, Sängers und Gitarristen erscheint am 20. Juni als CD (ccd 11098) und audiophile Doppel-LP auf 180Gramm-Vinyl (cca 1098) bei CrossCut Records (Sony BMG in der Schweiz).

He's got soul!

'Love Man Riding' is Philipp Fankhauser's eleventh album release. The Swiss vocalist, guitar player and songwriter is presenting an impressionable album, off the beaten tracks. He wrote most of the songs, either alone, or with the support of producer Dennis Walker (Robert Cray, B.B. King, John Campbell). Songs with a timeless recall factor. But foremost he's a fantastic singer, soulful and expressive, emotional and powerful. Like Van Morrison or Robert Cray, Fankhauser's telling stories, striking a chord in people. His songs are dealing with everyday life, with loneliness and charmless hotel rooms. Philipp Fankhauser has lived the blues. He went through all the ups and downs of a blues musician, and he is regarding himself a bluesman. But he's not representing the blues cliché. "What counts for me is the song, the expression – people that have something to say. It's not a matter of guitars or hamonicas. It's a matter of songs with a meaning. Of course these songs require appropriate instrumentation." Fankhauser refers to singers like Jimmy Witherspoon or Bobby 'Blue' Bland. This kind of blues is closer to soul rather than rock'n'roll. "One thing's for sure: I really respect those singers. But my cultural background is different. Bland's a black American musician. My skin is white, and I'm from Switzerland. I am Philipp Fankhauser."

In 1994, Philipp Fankhauser received a call from Texas bluesman Johnny Copeland. Johnny Copeland asked him to join his touring band – as the lead vocalist(!), a dream come true for the young Swiss who then made the USA his home. Finally he had arrived in the mother country of the blues, the music that he loved so much. Johnny Copeland became his mentor, and Philipp's deeply grateful to this very day. "Johnny was the first teaching me that there is more to soulful music than three chords and twelve bars. Blues can only be found in songs that have a meaning for you. The feeling's gotta touch you." Johnny Copeland died in 1997. Life treated Philipp good, and life treated him bad. In 2000, Philipp Fankhauser returned to Switzerland. Due to the international line-up of his current live band, different musical preferences along with new facets have been added to Philipp's blues. "My musical environment is created by people from different angels. The drummer plays in a latin band. With the exception of Richard Cousins, no one has a blues biography." Guesting on 'Love Man Riding' are, amongst others, famous percussion player Luis Conte, and Swiss recording star Stephan Eicher.

Besides his passion for soulful blues, Philipp Fankhauser has a strong sense for latin music. Richard Torrance's hit record 'Rio De Janeiro Blue' stands for Philipp's appreciation of Brazilian music. "From childhood on I have favored two different music styles. My first love is the blues. But I also love the bossa nova: Tom Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil. In my heart, it's all the same music. Antonio Carlos Jobim and B.B. King are all the same. Maybe they are deriving from different places. But my perception, my heartbeat has always been akin." How can you bring together blues and bossa? Philipp Fankhauser replies: "The blues is what matters to me. The bossa's firing my imagination".

Obviously, Philipp Fankhauser's affecting the Swiss audience. Only a few days after the original release date, 'Love Man Riding' entered the CD sales charts at postion number seven.
